In the latest global university rankings for 2026, Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) has officially dropped out of the Top 100, landing in 105th position. This marks a significant change in the global higher education landscape, as MSU was, until now, Russia’s only university to consistently appear in the top tier.
The university had previously maintained a place within the Top 100 in various years, with rankings such as 74th in 2021, 84th in 2020, and 94th in 2025. However, this year’s ranking confirms a continued downward trend.
A Gradual Decline
The fall to 105th place is not a sudden event. Over the past five years, MSU’s ranking has steadily decreased year after year. The latest result reflects long-term patterns in key performance indicators used in international rankings, including academic reputation, international outlook, and research impact.
No Russian Universities in the Top 100
With this development, Russia no longer has any universities ranked among the world’s Top 100 in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings. This leaves a gap in global representation for the country at the highest academic level, based on international ranking standards.
Opportunities for Others
The absence of Russian universities in the Top 100 creates more space for universities from other regions to rise. Institutions in Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe have made significant advances in international rankings, and the competition at the global level continues to intensify.
