In 2025, the Council of Europe launched the European Year of Digital Citizenship Education to promote awareness and implementation of its digital citizenship framework. The campaign aims to empower learners to navigate online environments safely, ethically, and effectively while respecting human rights and democratic values.

Through cross-sectoral cooperation between ministries, NGOs, and schools, the initiative supports teacher training, policy reform, and youth participation in shaping digital education standards. Events, toolkits, and open resources are being released throughout the year to assist national efforts.

The initiative is expected to culminate in a pan-European policy summit in December 2025, where success stories and future challenges will be discussed.
