Estonia is emerging as a global pioneer in educational innovation with its nationwide initiative to integrate artificial intelligence into secondary education. Launching in September 2025, the “AI Leap” program will provide personal AI accounts to all 16- and 17-year-old students, as well as training and tools to 5,000 teachers.
This initiative is part of Estonia’s broader digital transformation strategy and aims to prepare students for future labor market demands. The program focuses not only on equipping schools with advanced technology, but also on reforming pedagogical methods to promote critical thinking, data literacy, and ethical use of AI.
By 2027, the initiative targets full-scale implementation across Estonia’s education system. The program builds on the country’s reputation for digital leadership, dating back to the 1997 “Tiger Leap” that brought internet access to every school. Unlike other European countries debating phone bans in schools, Estonia views technology as a central component of modern education.
